Zeref explained himself, and even mentioned his burgeoning Alvarez Empire. Despite it all, Mavis loved him, and they embraced. The curse finally claimed Mavis' life when Zeref loved her back, and Mavis' nearly lifeless body was returned to Fairy Tail and preserved in an obelisk-shaped lacrima. Alike And Opposite The relationship between Mavis and Zeref is one of duality light and dark, life and death, love and hate. The two are alike in their plights as immortals, bearing the dreadful curse of Ankhselam and their love of family. But otherwise, they went in opposite directions with their eternal lives. Zeref represents the selfish side of immortality, using his ample time and power to concoct grand schemes to return to his ordinary family life with Natsu.
